Saddam Hussein sat a man not divided. he knew his course of action in taking Kuwait to build his countries wealth. How this was viewed by the UN was of no concern to him. He believed they would not be brave enough to act and hoped his neighboring countries would support his war for land. They did not.
Saddam Hussein believed Kuwait had siphoned oil from Iraq. He used this excuse, which wasn't true to allow him to invade Kuwait and take their oil. He tried gaining support from other countries with lies saying that all Muslims should rally behind his "Holy War". This was the exact opposite as Egypt and many other Middle Eastern countries asked the UN to help deal with Iraq's invasion of Kuwait.
After deciding the course of action in the UN, America and Great Britain took up their arms and started a war that Iraq could never win. Starting with aerial bombings from superior US planes, they were able to weaken the troops of Iraq to the brink of collapse. Within just seven months the allies were able to break Kuwait out of Iraq's hold and push them back. The end of the war occurred on February 28th, 1991 after president George H. W. Bush declared a cease fire. However, the war was not able to take out the Hussein Regime and only in 2003 was the Iraq government restored to democracy. |
Kirk's view of the Gulf war was from a different perspective. He told me of his support of the war the first time, hinting at his views on the second Gulf War. He believed the Saddam Hussein was intolerable when he attacked Kuwait. He talked about the rising gas prices due to the fact that Middle Eastern countries and other oil producing countries used the war as a means of increasing their payout. He hoped to have joined the military at the time, but thought he was too old and believes that leaving the Hussein regime in charge of Iraq was unfinished work because of their treatment of Iraq and other countries.
