Background of the 90's
The 90's. Their affect on the future of both America and the World was unrivaled. The Pop Culture of the 90's had a profound impact on the way Americans behave. New music allowed people to express themselves via the musicians and songs they listened to and to try new things in their style. Innovations in technology for both leisure activity and scientific research and advancement allowed for the world to grow closer together. All forms of technology found a new market place as prices declined and allowed more average Joes to have an experience that their parents could never imagine. All in all the 90's were a time of change in a Kanye way of life for every American, but I chose to focus on four main subtopics that I think had the most effect on the world.
The End of the cold war between the US and the USSR helped to bring an era of fear and proxy wars to an end. As the cold war ended it also led to the downfall of the USSR toppling its communist empire. The start and the finish of the Gulf war in Iraq was used to show not just America's but the UN's use of power to restrict the armies of tyrannical dictators like Sadaam Hussein. His invasion of Kuwait to try and take their oil or in his words a "holy crusade" showed the power that some dictators can amass with words and emotion. Columbine was a tragedy for the United States. The loss of 13 American students in a school shooting broke the dream state that America had been living in. No longer was it right for the jocks to bully the nerds or geeks. After columbine America and its people realized the damage bullying can do and what extremes it can lead some kids to take. Columbine was a wake up call for America. How did the launching of the world wide web affect America. That question can't be answered with simple terms. It was a turning point in history as an abundance of information became available to the common person. New business, job, education and many other opportunities grew out of the young world wide web, allowing it to flourish and thrive. All of these topics were experienced by my dad, Kirk Watkins. In this website I will share his memories of these major events and not only his view, but the view from the rest of the world. |
